Four Aims for Materials

To refine small hand movement
To work on eye-hand coordination
To offer variations in the movement of grasping
To coordinate two hands working together

In the Montessori classroom, a child is allowed freedom of choice as well as freedom of movement. The child is guided in learning, not dictated to. The environment is designed to foster independence, helping the child gain respect for self, for others and for the environment.
